THE SCHOOL COUNSELLOR
The school counsellor provides an individual counselling and
educational assessment and support service for students, Kindergarten
to Year 6. Referrals by teachers are made through the school’s learning
support team. Parents seeking to discuss their child’s educational
progress and/or social-emotional and behaviour adjustment concerns are
requested to consult with the school executive, prior to making an
appointment through the office.
THE TEACHER-LIBRARIAN
The Teacher-Librarian has qualifications both as a classroom teacher
and as a teacher librarian. In this role the librarian works with every
class in the school for literature enrichment and the development of
information skills using technology.
Children are encouraged to borrow from the library each week. Children in Kindergarten through to Year 3 are expected to use a library bag to protect their books. These can be purchased from the library.
The library is open each day before school and at lunchtime for reading, borrowing and quiet games. Parent involvement in the library is always welcome. The library also stocks an extensive collection for parents to borrow.
READING RECOVERY
Reading Recovery is an early intervention strategy which is based on an
explicit instructional program in a one to one situation with a trained
Reading Recovery teacher. Reading Recovery is offered to children in
Year 1 who have completed one year of schooling and require extra
support in literacy in order to accelerate their progress in reading.
Entry to this program is based on specific screening tests.
LEARNING SUPPORT TEACHER
The learning support teacher assists staff in supporting children with
special needs. Programs are developed to meet these learning
requirements. Strategies involve small group teaching or individual
instruction. Interviews conducted with parents in conjunction with
class teachers can lead to helpful home support activities so that the
child receives optimum benefit. The parental support of children in
this program is vital.
LEARNING SUPPORT TEAM
The learning support team monitors all students needing support in the
school environment. It comprises the school counsellor, all support
staff and members from learning teams. Students are referred to the
learning support team for a variety of reasons. The learning support
team determines the most appropriate course of action to support each
individual student, at all levels. Outside agencies, or people such as
the school nurse, may form part of the referral process.
ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE (ESL)
An ESL teacher works specifically with students who have English as
their second language. This staffing is based strictly on a needs
basis. The role of the ESL teacher is to encourage confidence in the
speaking, reading and writing of English.
